Calling all Earth Observation and Blockchain Innovators!

Are you ready to use your skills to create a more sustainable and transparent world? We’re seeking passionate individuals eager to build solutions that leverage Earth observation data and blockchain technology to address pressing environmental and economic challenges.

You don’t have to be an expert in Earth Observation or Blockchain technology! Just bring your curiosity and drive to make a difference! Here’s your chance to:

  • Tackle challenges related to climate change, resource management, supply chain transparency, and more.
  • Utilize EU space technologies and open data to develop groundbreaking solutions.
  • Win the opportunity to receive further expert mentoring and guidance from ESA experts, on how to implement your technical ideas or upscale your business concepts!
Ready to make an impact? Join the Hackathon and help shape a brighter future! Follow the simple steps below to get involved.
  • Challenge:

The climate crisis is an existential threat, demanding we go beyond the basics of clean energy adoption. We need to ensure every step towards carbon reduction is verifiable and transparent. Current methods often fall short, leaving room for greenwashing and slowing down real action. This challenge highlights the urgent need for tools that not only monitor carbon offset projects but actively reward genuine progress in fighting climate change

This challenge invites innovators to develop products or services that leverage European space data and blockchain technology to enable effective solutions for mitigating climate change.

We encourage participants to propose solutions in the following areas and also explore beyond this list:

    • Transparent carbon credit marketplaces.
    • Monitoring and verification of deforestation or reforestation projects.
    • Early warning systems for extreme weather events, empowering communities to prepare and respond effectively.

  • Challenge:

Today's complex supply chains are often shrouded in opacity, making it difficult to ensure ethical and sustainable practices. This lack of transparency contributes to environmental degradation, human rights abuses, and inefficient resource management. This challenge calls for innovative solutions that leverage technology to illuminate every step of the supply chain.

By combining the power of blockchain's immutable record-keeping with Earth observation data's real-time monitoring capabilities, we can create a new era of accountability. This will enable businesses and consumers alike to make informed choices, supporting ethical sourcing, responsible resource management, and a transition towards a circular economy that minimizes waste and pollution.

This challenge invites innovators to develop products or services that leverage European space data and blockchain technology to enable effective solutions for supporting sustainability in supporting supply chain transparency and circular economy:

We encourage participants to propose solutions in the following areas and also explore beyond this list:

    • Tracking the origin and ethical sourcing of commodities (e.g., conflict minerals, sustainable seafood).
    • Monitoring and optimizing water usage in agriculture or industrial processes.
    • Identifying and preventing illegal logging or fishing activities.
    • Circular Economy Focus: Address challenges related to waste management, material recovery, and pollution prevention.

  • Challenge:

The insurance industry grapples with significant challenges in risk assessment, claims verification, and transparency. Traditional methods often rely on outdated information and manual processes, leading to inefficiencies, delays, and disputes. Inaccurate risk assessments can result in inadequate coverage or inflated premiums, while fraudulent claims and lengthy verification processes erode trust and increase costs. This challenge invites you to harness the power of Earth observation data and blockchain technology to address these pain points and build a more efficient, resilient, and trustworthy insurance ecosystem.

This challenge invites innovators to develop products or services that leverage European space data and blockchain technology to enable effective solutions for supporting sustainability in supporting supply chain transparency and circular economy:

We encourage participants to propose solutions in the following areas and also explore beyond this list:

    • Real-time monitoring of assets and infrastructure to assess and mitigate risks (e.g., flood zones, wildfire risk areas).
    • Using satellite imagery for accurate and efficient damage assessment after natural disasters.
    • Blockchain-based smart contracts for automated claims processing and payout.
  • Challenge:

Propose and develop your own innovative solution that leverages Earth observation data and blockchain technology to address a pressing global challenge.

  • Potential Focus Areas:

Sustainability, supply chain transparency, environmental monitoring, humanitarian aid, urban planning, or any other area where you see the potential for impact.

  • Key Considerations:

Demonstrate the value proposition of your solution, its feasibility, and how it utilizes the unique capabilities of both Earth observation and blockchain.
